Can I use style sheets when creating an email for marketing purposes?

I am looking to create an email blast for marketing purposes...can I use style sheets when sending out an HTML email?

How's this for a wishy-washy answer...yes, and no.

Yes, HTML emails can be styled using CSS, but it's most reliable if that CSS is contained within the page, rather than using the <link /> to an external style sheet.

Some email clients will accept <link /> if you use the full url (as you would with an image) and some will ignore it. Best thing to do is to play around with different environments (gmail, yahoo!, hotmail, outlook, thunderbird, etc.) and see which one works best. Obviously, the most dominant client in the business world is Outlook.

Most of your web-based interfaces (Smarter Mail, and the like) *should* support the <link /> as they are using the browser to display the menu. I'm not sure what Outlook uses for rendering HTML emails, but it sure doesn't behave like IE.
