Connection to the internet through D-link Dl-604 enough protection? Won't work with Zone Alert on

When I installed the d-link dl-604 I had problems with the browsers. The d-link folks told me to turn off Zone Alert, that with the router I was protected and did not need ZA. When I reboot, I have to shut down ZA each time, but I am reluctant to uninstall it without knowing for sure that I am safe.

Zone Alert being your software firewall right?
Okay, your router comes with a hardware firewall and that is pretty secure. Zone Alert is software firewall - is this the one that is part of Zone Alarm? I had problems with Zone Alarm when I was using that, some crap about some vector. It was so frustrating so now I never recommend that. I consider it as bad as Norton - this is from my experience only. Zonealarm I found to be more intrusive also.

I use Sygate personal firewall, it is basic but pretty good. You can still download it although it is not officially supported anymore.

To test how good your security is, go to grc.com and test yourself using their shieldsup + other tools. This is what I use to test my security and its solid!!!
I know Im safe :)

"I know Im safe" Famous last words, eh? Sorry couldn't resist! Show me a computer and I show you a security risk! The only secure computer is a switched off computer.

We use zone alarm in our company (>25,000 people world wide) I connect through the DSL 604 T to the Internet and the VPN. Never had any problems!

Never trust a help desk guy! They tell you to shut off the firewall instead of trying to find the problem and configure the firewall properly!

Cheers

LOL!, your right there Peter, any serious hacker can get thru but grc.com is a good website to at least show any flaws and I doubt the casual hacker will spend time trying to get in when there are other easy prey. I have 3 firewalls protecting my computer, the router, windows firewall and sygate. I have managed to track every program that tries to talk to the net. Ive configured my router so only a few ports (some high number) are open. Thats as safe as one can get on a running computer - me thinks!

As their are problems with Zone Alert, what Im suggesting to romander is to try a different software firewall, not get rid of one altogether.

Can I ask if your browsers run fine when using d-link ? I assume so. Im trying to figure out how a software firewall should be affecting the hardware firewall.
If your connections were fine using just zone alert and prior to using d-link then adding a router shouldnt cause an issue, I would of thought.

Have you tried updating the firmware on the router?
Im looking at this which says zone alarm issues resolved
http://www.antifart.com/2006/09/02/d-lin...

Always recommended to backup your router settings and get latest from d-link themselves.

I use linksys and its very easy to do the backing up and upgrading. No idea on the d-link though.

nidhi,

I didn't want to critizise your approach. I would try the same. Install a different firewall. At least then you know that ZoneAlarm is the culprit! I just wanted to say that there seems to be a way to run ZoneAlarm using the DSL G604T. The answer he got from dlink is typical. "It is not our fault. It must be some other third part software!" I hate this!

Let us know how you get on romander!

Cheers

Peter, yea I know your not critising and I do agree with you also in that some configuration will help. Looking at that link it seems some firmware upgrade might do the trick.

My pc runs very slow, which drives me crazy, my friend recommended me a software tuneup360 several days ago, he said it is a pc cleaner; it seems very useful, but I wonder what’s the function of a pc cleaner?
