How can I code and test a website (in PHP/MySQL) on my laptop before I acquire the actual webspace?

I'll have an Apache Server soon but I'm looking for a way to get started with the code right now. Is there a way to simulate a server/database environment on my PC? I have plenty of hard drive space to use. Thanks!

Sure there is!

You can download and install Apache, PHP and MySQL on your own Windows PC. It will take some time to configure it to run properly but it's not too complicated these days - the install tools will guide you through the rough bits.

Then, to access the PHP pages on your own web server, you just type "localhost" as the domain name in the address bar of your browser.

If you would like to know more about how to do this, don't hesitate to ask.

The easiest way to get Apache, MySQL and PHP on your windows PC is to install WAMP.

That can be found here: http://www.wampserver.com/

It comes pre-configured for development work and has documentation for it's use. It also comes with some tools out of the box such as phpMyAdmin.

EasyPHP is also a great tool, it comes with PHP, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin, PHP extensions and it is very easy to use!
