How does Google Analytics accomplish showing you on a map where people are visiting your site from?

With google analytics, it not only tells me where my visitors are coming from but it also displays it on a map so I can actually visualize it. I know they accomplish this through flash to display it, but does anyone know the methods they would use to accomplish this? I'm interested in doing something similar for one of my applications.

Im assuming they use the IP address. When someone visits your site, u will know their IP address.
Given a IP address, u can use something like tracert (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtec...) to find out where it came from. Given that info, u have a rough idea of where that person's ISP is.

Im afraid I dont know much more.

Yes, ok. Im right so far. I just checked the web to verify.
I came across this useful site which contains a IP address database.
http://www.justin-cook.com/wp/2006/11/29...

So it seems u need to

1. get IP Address
2. convert to IP number
3. use database to pinpoint location

In terms of visualisation, they probably determine the location then use their flash movies or whatever to move to that location in their maps.
That seems a lot of work!

That is what I need to know, how they visualize it.

Well, for flash development, here is a start. http://www.backspace.com/mapapp/
This shows u the country, I guess more detail is required to show the cities etc
and here is a simple tutorial on doing just that http://www.lukamaras.com/tutorials/cool-...

yahoo have a service which u may find useful http://developer.yahoo.com/maps/flash/as...

are you planning on developing such a tool? what language?
