An alternative : OpenLaszlo is an open source technology where you describe the GUI as XML coded nested objects with Javascript coded functions. The thing is compiled to Flash or DHTML. There is an embedded XML-RPC based protocol which gives AJAX functionality. You may have PHP on the server or a Tomcat based propietary server from LaszloSystems.
