Could be a number of things wrong that is causing overheating.

Could be an issue with the heatsink or possibly cpu not functioning efficiently i.e. overclocked.

Do you have enough ventilation going around your laptop? Make sure your vent holes are not blocked in any way. If your laptop is a little old then it could be a lot of dust inside. Its amazing how much dust hardware collects.

You can maybe try a USB cooling fan, see if that makes a difference.

There is this software called cpuidle. Maybe try that. It is reported to lower the temp http://www.cpuidle.de/downloads.php

But before you try any of the above, how old is your laptop? If it is pretty new or still under warranty then I would suggest you take it back.

Do remember if it keeps overheating there is the chance of further damage being done.

Nidhi is spot on most people don't think about dust but inside a laptop is such a small space it happens often. Ventilation is key if you have it on a desk try the ruler or popcap trick if there is very little clearance with the feet or better yet if you have the cash try buying something like the zalman ZM-NC2000 http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-ZM-NC2000-S... if you have larger than 15.4 inch screen or the zalman zm-nc1000 http://www.amazon.com/Zalman-NC1000-S-No... if you have than 15.4 or smaller. These are pretty quiet and do a good job at lowering temps, this could solve your problem. If you have core 2 duo cpuidle wont do much they are pretty intelligent they know when idle not to do anything :). Hope this helps

There is an easy way to handle your problem; maybe you can try the software "tuneup360". My friends and I all use it, which can help you fix all the problems you may encounter.
