How do I set the top line as a title line in Microsoft Excel so I can sort?

I am in excel and the first line is the titles to my rows, but every time I try to sort a column alphabetically it sorts the titles also. Is there a way to set that as a title row?

depending on your version of excel,
there is a little box that says (first row contains column headings) check that box and the first row will not be included in your sort.
another way to sort is to select only what you want to sort less the column titles.

sorry, the box to check appears if you use the tools->data->sort from the dropdown menu and not the toolbar button.
