Wait a little longer for the running program to finish what it's doing. the reason it's not responding is because it's still in the middle of something. what program are you using and what are you trying to do with it?

I sometimes get this and find the program has got its knickers in a twist. I get this regular with my Nero app the first time I start it up. My solution with that has been just to kill that process in task manager then I restart Nero, its all fine then. Do what oracle says, how long does it take before it responds? Sometimes programs Ive used for ages and are robust will occasionally slow down. Could be some other app in the background is taking CPU resources and your other programs are suffering. Im impatience so depending on what app it is, I kill that process via task manager. Obviously something which is contains stuff you have written, i.e. code or word doc, then its not recommended to close. Check out this faq on this message http://ask-leo.com/not_responding_what_d...

The hour glass wait icon never seems to time out. An example where the problem frequently (but not always) occurs is in Yahoo's financial market charts when I move from classical charts to open up the beta charts feature. One might think that because it's a beta application it's buggy, but this problem happens even in secure programs such as E-Trade and Investools (from Business Week) among others. I wonder if it’s related to a problem with Java script as I’ve seen a spoke icon showing execution progress then abruptly stopping. Thank you all for your suggestions. I do shut down using the task manager and then restart the program and most often it works on the second round but it’s a nuisance. I’ll try to be more patient. Keith

what task are you closing? is it just iexplore.exe? if it is, we can look at your active X controls or other add ons to solve the issue.
Time:: 18:29
Yes, it is only IE6. By mousing to the exit (X) the mouse pointer changes from an hour glass to an arrow. Upon closing IE6 I get the message "This program..."

lets explore the add-ons first. with internet explorer open, click on the Tools menu and go to Internet options. click on the programs tab and then click on manage add ons. for each item in the "show" box, go through the list and enable or disable the items idividually. don't worry, if you screw anything up, you can simply enable them again later. to speed up the process, disable them in this order: 1. active X controls 2. toolbars 3. Browser helper objects 4. anything from a publisher you've never heard of before 5. anything that's not microsoft. if you have found the culprit, you can either leave it disabled, or I can walk you through how to permanently remove it.

Thank you, this will take some time as I've accumulated a lot of add-ons along the way.

Thank you oracleofDelphi, you solved the problem! I did as you suggested and disabled each add-on category, tested, enabled it if ok and moved on to the next. The problem was in the Browser helper objects group. In particular, McAfee SiteAdvisor. This was a freebie that McAfee sent me and now I see it's buggy. Another freebie they sent was Winferno Registry power cleaner which was also problematic in that it would wipe out McAfee's antivirus program. Even their Restore didn't help so I had to reinstall McAfee AV. Thank you everyone for your help.

I seem to have trouble logging in to Quomon as they sent me a password that is not recognized. I''m re-entering as a new user with a new password.
