I have turned off all firewalls and security but still no joy. Can anyone help, this is driving me mad.

There are a few things you can look at. First, are you using the Netgear software on your computer to connect to the router or windows? Sometimes one may work opposed to the other and one can get disabled on accident. Which ever you are using is enabled.

Make sure your router is b/g, I believe your laptop model is shipped with b/g compatibility.

Match up the settings with your sons laptop to make sure it matches. The encryption is key here, make sure you are using what you set on your router.

Make sure your passphrase is correct.
