Why is my computer running slow and the computer usage at 100% all the time?

Alright, having issues with my computer. Ever since 5 days ago the computer has been running really slow. I already ran my full disk scan with Norton which usually fixes the problem but it is still dragging. I then freed up an additional few Gigs of memory just in case it was a memory problem and still no go. Also ran a Defragmentation and Disc Cleanup and still no results.

When I am not doing anything, the Task manager says the system idol process is at 85% but as soon as I begin doing anything else, the computer really slows down and it varies from a CPU usage of 10-100%.

Any hints?

ok.. im sure your computer is having some viruses and trojans... which are not being detected by Norton.... maybe because your norton is not updated.... or because.. they cannot be detected while windows is running..... download avast antivirus ... as this has a boot time scan of viruses and trojans..... i think this should solve your problem.

Well - the answer from sumit_rai could be one reason! But I personally wouldn't expect the worst case from the start. First do some checks before you get out the big gun and shoot the critters!

Unfortunately you do not give much detail about the version of Windows running on your machine.

Here is what I would do. First I would like to know what actually is running on my machine. In order to do so, you should start the Task Manager. Do this when the machine is slow. You can start the task manager i.e. with a right mouse click in a free area of your status bar and select Task Manager. Then click on the Tab "Processes". You will see all the processes currently running. Click on the heading "CPU" TWICE and the display will show the processes which use most of the CPU at the top of the list. Try to identify the process which uses most CPU, (Except the system idle Process). You then know who is slowing down your system. If you do not know what this process is for, go to a site like i.e. http://www.processlibrary.com/ and enter the process name. You will then see exactly what this process is for.

So now you identified the process which is consuming your CPU time (You can do the same with the memory consumers). You can now make a decision what next steps to do. Different options here:
The process is a necessary process and you have to run it: Wellthen the only thing you can do is get more memory or a faster computer

The process is a process of an application which you installed recently: Then you can decide if you still need this application or if you can uninstall it.

The process is a malicious process: Then you should run your virus detector or get a new one

One more thing: At work we run CA Antivirus. This has a module called "Inotask.exe". This module has a bug which kicks in every time daylight saving changes and consumes all the CPU it can get! It has nothing to do with a virus etc. The simple solution we have to do is to restart the Virus job server and it is fixed. I only mention this to show you that it isn't always a virus which is causing some problems. Google is very useful tool in situations like this!

So before you start panicking and think you are virus infected and install even more software on your machine, which will then slow it down even more,do first some checks and get to know what is really going on!

Good luck!

Cheers

Peter

Alright, did both.

I downloaded Vast last night and it ran a system scan upon rebooting but when I came into work this morning it is still lagging.

PeterNZ:
I had looked at my processes before and it seems when I am doing nothing, like now, the System Idle Process is between 70-85 which is normal. But as soon as I start browsing around on the internet my iexpolre.exe and explore.exe are going to around 50-60 and when it really effects me is when I go into Thunderbird and it takes FOREVER to get a response in that program. Everytime I click on an email message it takes the CPU usage for thunderbird.exe and pumps it to about 85-90.

My problem is, usually the computer runs fine up until 5 days ago. Then it started to drag. It has happened in the past but when I run a antivirus scan it usually cleans it up but this time it didn't.

Any other suggestions?

Alright, another problem that goes along with this...

Last week I started to run out of disk space on my computer so I ran a bunch of backups and then deleted about 3 gigs worth. So, for the last week I had 3.5 gigs of space left and life was grand besides a small computer. Well, after today I am back down to 150 Megs. This is not normal...Can anyone help me here?

OK, I found it.

It was a virus and you can see it in the HiJackThis log above Here:

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [isamonitor.exe] C:\Program Files\VideoKeyCodec\isamonitor.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [pmsngr.exe] C:\Program Files\VideoKeyCodec\pmsngr.exe

The VideoKeyCodec is actually trojan software that I picked up while running video I guess. I did the following:

1) Ran "Spybot: Search and Destroy" software which found the Trojan
2) Ran "SmitFraudFix" to make sure all the components were gone
3) Ran my Antivirus just for giggles.

It has improved the situation drastically and although it is still lagging a bit, I can work on it again.

you have viruses on your computer.Norton could not detect them as it is the worst antivirus. So download malwarebytes from malwarebytes.org and then update it and then run a full scan.It is only 3mb in size and can remove viruses that others cannot.

Slow problem is a common event for Windows user. It's not all related with hardware, registry, viruses or spyware!

"No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time." Microsoft claimed that on their technical forum(Windows 7 forum).

In fact, Windows built-in a lot of services and startup item start with system. So if you want a faster computer, you need to disable some of them first.

I saw an article before. It descripe how to make your windows faster.

Slow run and slow boot up are common problems for Windows user. The causes are often very complicated. It's not all related with hardware, registry, viruses or spyware!

"No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time." Microsoft claimed that on their technical forum(Windows 7 forum).

For example, Windows built-in a lot of services and startup item start with system. Think about that, how could your computer boot faster while more than 50 service start with system Windows. So if you want a faster computer, you need to disable some of them first.

I saw an article on google search engine before. It descriped how to make your windows faster easily. You can get some tips from it. Hope help you!

in addition to info of rai and peternz u can also try this steps:

1:go to control panel ,click the display icon, click the appearance tab then, click the effects button and uncheck or clear "use the following transition effect. press ok then apply.

2:try downloading avast anti virus and scan your pc this will double check if your pc has virus.NOTE: some anti virus doesnt detect other virus unlike avast.

i hope this helps =) actually i had the same problem but i fix it

The reason why your PC start slow is too many application are started at the beginning, maybe you can turn off some in the control panel, or there is an easy way, you just need a software to help you do this, try Tuneup360, you will be surprised by its powerful function!!!

I think an easy way to keep your computer from running Slow is to install a PC protector or cleaning, according to my personal experience, Tuneup360 is good choice, and your computer takes only 30 sec to start up if you have it!!!
