Why is my iPod Shuffle not being recognized by my USB port even thought I have iTunes 7.02?

I am trying to use my iPod shuffle with my computer to put music into it and its simply not working. I plug it into the USB port and then I get a message on my computer on the lower righthand side that says:

-------
This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi Speed USB 2.0 port.

For a list of available ports click here.
-------

When the windows hardware installer pops up I click continue and then it tells me that it cant find the necessary software and at that point I look at my computer dumbfounded. Anyone have a clue?

Knowing nothing about iPods it seems to me that a special hardware driver is needed to establish the connection. If the iPod came with a CD/DVD I recommend that you insert it at some point. Alternatively you may find a driver by searching the internet.

The message concerning "Hi speed USB port" is probably not part of the problem. It's a quite common message (in my experience) that simply says that the device is connected to a USB 1.1 port and therefore will transfer files slower that if it was connected to a USB 2.0 port. The connection should still work. (An interesting but slightly unrelated question is why computers often claims that a certain USB 2.0 port is only performing under the USB 1.1 standard. That is at least the case with my computer and I haven't been able to figure out why.)

From what I've seen on the web, iTunes 7 has the driver downloaded when you download iTunes so that should take care of it. Problem is, I already have iTunes 7 and it doesnt help.

Maybe you could ask the "New hardware wizard" to look in a specified location and then point it to the iTunes program folder?

Yeah, I'll try that out.

This never got resolved but I think it was just my computer.

I probably would have needed to reinstall my Operating System in order to get the drives to work properly.
