i have a compaq wireless enabled lap top and have just bought a new printer, hp 3050. do I need a wireless router to connect the 2? I know i could hard wire it with usb cable but that would be inconvenient at times with cables lying about.

you answered your own question. yes you can connect using usb. without usb then you need to buy a wireless router, setup a password then just connect your printer and laptop, no problem. Decide on a budget and research on models. I have a linksys wrt54g for cable modem. Old but still good. Also make sure what security protocols your printer supports. The router comes with 4 ethernet ports most probably. You can place printer near router and connect via ethernet cable also.
