hard disk error, how can i solve it?

My computer has started to freeze after a few minutes of being started up. I checked the event viewer and there is an error with the hard disk, a bad sector.
I remember having heard about programs that can solve these kind of issues instead of having to get a new harddisk. I think they sort of protect the bad sectors from being used and the rest works just like normal.
Is that the way to solve it and can you recommend any programs that do this?

thanks...

I found out that windows has a disk check utility that should serve the purpose.
The steps to use it are:
- Double-click on My Computer to open the My Computer window.
- Select the disk that you want to diagnose and repair.
- Choose Properties from the File menu. You should see the Properties window for the drive that you selected.
- Choose the Tools tab.
- Click the Check Now button under Error Checking Status.
- Depending on your version of Windows, choose either "Thorough" or "Scan for and Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors."
- Click on Start.

I'm still not sure that it works, since the computer didn't freeze immediately, but it seems to last longer now, so within a couple of days, I should be able to confirm the solution or not.

One of my hard drives was doing something similar. It used to make a noise then freeze. Eventually it died. The cause was a power failure which shut down my PC. Problem started straight after.
Do you have access to another hard drive? I recommend you perform a backup of your important stuff asap.
If u know how to add hard drives, u could try installing windows on a new master or if u have a external, try to backup as much as u can.
If no hard drive, u could try burning to DVD/CD or some memory card/usb memory stick.

In terms of fixing, what make is your hard disk, do u know? the manufacturer of that drive may have a diagnostics program which u should try.
Most manufacturers also offer 3 yr warranty, so u could maybe raise a support call with them.

it could be more than just a hard drive..Have u added any memory or something? Sometimes memory incompatability or dodgy PSU unit can cause similar problems.

Also check out pcpitstop. Download a small file from there and u can send them the results. Its all free http://www.pcpitstop.com/

Ive a bad feeling there isnt much u can do here. Im not familiar with the types of programs u say, those that avoid bad sectors. I would of thought when using windows, its the low level stuff that would need changing.

But first things first - BACKUP!!!

If windows can fix the bad sectors then you should be okay but for how long, I dont know. Still recommend you backup whilst u can.

the fix didn't work after all.
still haven't found a solution, so it might be true that the end is near... :(
i didn't get to try pcpitstop yet, but i'll do that.
the warranty is not valid anymore, the laptop is 5 years old, so i suppose it's actually quite "old" for laptops and a surprise that it's been working well until now. It's an ASUS L1400.

You dont know how long the disk will last. It could pack up next week or in 2 months time. Nevertheless, use whatever time you may have to get your important stuff backed up and attempt to repair.
