how do i convert selection.createRange to be used in firefox?

I need to get the selected text from a textarea.
It works fine in IE with document.selection.createRange(), but not in Firefox.
It doesn't have to be crossbrowser, I just want to be able to do the same thing in Firefox (IE doesn't matter right now).

could it be because the syntax is different?

maybe use document.getSelection for firefox

see this for explanation

I am bothered with the slow internet connection for quite a long time, but now I found an easy way to handle my problem, which is the software tuneup360.
