The best way would be to reinstall the OS, using a valid software licence. Normally, the laptop should have the licence number with the official Microsoft sticker somewhere on it.

another possiblity if u have a CD, do what lprotti says or use the recovery console, reset administrator and try from there

if u dont have windows xp cd then your screwed. A password recovery service might be available but I dont know of one.
